BACKGROUND

A New York City native who currently resides in Newport Beach, Calif., Vandeweghe didn’t pick up a racket until the age of 11, but has not let that slow her down for one moment. She was the first American in 10 years to win the US Open junior tournament without losing a set in 2008 and reached her first WTA final at Stanford in 2012. Self-described as “a total California girl,” she spends most her days off at the beach or learning to play her first song on the guitar.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE?

06:00 I wake up (ouch)
08:00 fitness mostly consists of movement and footwork
11:00 first tennis practice. This practice we like to do more drilling working on patterns or a specific shot
12:45 lunch and a quick nap! I love to sleep
14:15 fitness this gym work is mostly weights and at the end some really tough cardio
15:30 2nd tennis practice. I either play a match or implement the patterns that we work on in the morning into point play
17:00 veg out
19:00 dinner!! :))
21:00 bedtime I am usually to tired to stay awake.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN TENNIS?

"I started playing tennis because my older brother Beau played and I was determined to be the annoying little sister that did everything with her older brother and beat him at it! He still thinks he can beat me by the way.

I decided when I was 16 that I didn't want to go to college and play tennis; I wanted to achieve my goal and become number one in the world. I ended up wining junior US Open becoming the first American in 10 years to do so that year. So for me that helped me make my decision as well [on switching from amateur to pro]."
