Research & Development of Eco-Friendly Products
What is eco-friendly manufacturing?
Setting the Standards for Eco-Friendly Products
In order to promote eco-friendly manufacturing and fulfilling its CSR as a manufacturer, we have established ASICS ECO PLAN Mark Recognition Standard, a voluntary standard for eco-friendly products, in the fiscal year 2006. The ASICS
ECO PLAN mark will be attached on products that satisfy this standard.
ASICS makes it a rule that an eco-friendly product must have either Eco Mark recognition or ASICS ECO PLAN mark recognition and, as the establishment of standard sets clear goals
in development activities, people are better motivated to develop eco-friendly products.
We will continue our efforts in R&D to increase the number of eco-friendly products. In addition, we plan to review the standard regularly to enable "eco-friendly
manufacturing" as well.
ASICS ECO PLAN Mark Recognition StandardASICS continues to make efforts to establish a recycling oriented manufacturing system in order to hand down the environment responsibility to the next generation.
Products that
conform to the following rules shall be recognized as the company's eco-friendly products and the ASICS ECO PLAN mark shall be given to them.
| Clean |
We will reduce environmental impact in manufacturing activities.
* Products made of environmentally-friendly materials for reduced impact at time of disposal
* Products constructed with materials that easily biodegrade and breakdown to reduce environmental impact at time of disposal
|
| Saving |
We will save energy and resources used in manufacturing activities.
* Resource saving products that use less materials
* Products that make efficient use of resources by adopting common materials
* Energy saving products with an energy efficient manufacturing process
|
| Sustainable |
We will reduce wastes by extending product life.
* Products that allow repair and replacement of worn out parts or those with a construction that makes repair and replacement easy
* Products that use durable materials and are of durable construction
|
| Recycle |
We will recycle products towards the goal of a recycling oriented society.
* Products designed for the recycling system (product collection recycling product)
* Products that make use of waste materials
* Products that make use of recycled materials
|
| Packaging materials |
We consider packaging materials to be parts of the product and will make efforts for the reduction and simplification of packaging materials.

An assessment using our own standards
The Number of Eco-Friendly Products Developed

In the fiscal year 2007, we set the goal of developing 220 eco-friendly products. As a result of developing products based on the ASICS ECO PLAN Mark Recognition
Standard, we surpassed the goal by developing a total of 230 eco-friendly products, 43 more than the previous year. We will continue our efforts to increase the number of eco-friendly products developed each year.
* Since the fiscal year 2006,
eco-friendly products refer to those that satisfy the ASICS ECO PLAN Mark Recognition Standard and those recognized under the Eco Mark program.

Athletic spiked shoes is one of the areas in which it is difficult to make eco-friendly products. Nevertheless, we
undertook the challenge by reviewing various aspects of the product, including the materials, cost, durability, etc. This product is an entry model for athletes and is the best seller among our athletic spiked shoes. We feel it is a significant
achievement to make an eco-friendly product that will be used by a lot of people.

Enforced with excellent anti-abrasive artificial leather
As the enforcement material for the area surrounding the sole, which is vulnerable to wear and tear by the shock of landing, we used DINO-SKIN that
has an approximately four times stronger anti-abrasive property (compared to conventional ASICS products) to make the shoes more durable.

Enforced with recycled polyester (PET) artificial leather
More than 5% of the shoe weight is made up of artificial leather utilizing recycled polyester (PET).

Adoption of Solyte mid sole
The mid sole (the cushioning material in between the top lining and the sole) is made of Solyte, a low density material which exhibits cushioning property equivalent to that of
ordinary sponge. This saves raw material and makes the shoe lighter.

Use of anti-abrasive rubber
From the heel to the outer portion of the arch of the foot, the sole is made of AHAR rubber, which is approximately three times stronger against wear (compared to conventional
ASICS products), to increase the durability.
Asuka Katayama, Lifestyle Walking Products Planning and Development Team, Footwear Division Voice of the designer
ASICS' walking shoes consist of upper shoes mainly made of leather and replaceable soles, which extend the
product life.
Extending the product life of favorite shoes and/or broken in shoes is our way of preserving the environment. We try to develop such products and set up a repair system.

Replaceable sole
In order to extend the service life of the shoes, it is possible to replace the sole together with the heel.
Ayumi Ueno, Court Products Planning and Development Team, Footwear Division Voice of the designer
In addition to the use of AHAR rubber, which has an excellent anti-abrasive property, the product life is extended by
making the shoe washable. The use of PET bottle recycled material makes the product even more eco-friendly.
Although nurse shoes are generally replaced in a short cycle due to the possibility of contamination with blood, ASICS puts an emphasis on
extended use in its design.

Use of recycled polyester (PET) artificial leather for more than 10%
More than 10% of the total shoe weight is made of recycled polyester (PET) artificial leather.

This is a resource recycling type product. After use, the wear will be collected and turned into a raw material in the ECOTALK
recycling system, in which polyester (PET) is decomposed by heat together with coal in the coke generation process of iron-making. It is an eco-friendly product that enables us to use oil, which cannot be reproduced, over a prolonged period. We will
continue to develop eco-friendly sport swear to show our support for environmental preservation.

While satisfying the properties required for a net, such as high strength and good visibility, the product was developed with
consideration for the environment and has been recognized for Eco Mark, ASICS ECO PLAN mark, and Green Procurement Program.
In addition to the use of recycled polyester (PET), abolishing the use of PVC caused unexpected difficulties in the production
but we were able to overcome the problem by making changes to the specifications.
We will continue the effort to develop eco-friendly products.
