Whatâs the difference between the ASICS METASPEEDââ™ SKY, EDGE and RAY shoes?
ASICS offers three designs in the ASICS METASPEEDââ™ racing shoe lineup to reinforce your running style. The ASICS METASPEEDââ™ SKY shoe is ideal for stride-style runners who extend the length of their stride to increase speed. The ASICS METASPEEDââ™ EDGE model better fits a cadence-style runner, gaining speed with increased step frequency. The latest addition to the collection, the METASPEEDââ™ RAY shoe, is designed for elite runners, especially forefoot runners, who strive for a fast start and finish.
Hereâs a more detailed breakdown of each METASPEEDââ™ model:
- METASPEEDââ™ SKY: The METASPEEDââ™ SKY shoe is designed for runners who lengthen their strides to run faster. A higher and more curved midsole promotes a propulsive toe-off. FF LEAPââ™ cushioning works alongside FF TURBOââ™ PLUS, configured with a full-length carbon plate to give you forward spring for improved efficiency and a longer stride.
- METASPEEDââ™ EDGE: The METASPEEDââ™ EDGE shoe is for runners who gain speed with increased step cadence. A carbon plate placed lower in the midsole supports quicker step turnover as the highly responsive and lightweight FF LEAPââ™ cushioning propels you forward with a higher energy return.
- METASPEEDââ™ RAY: The METASPEEDââ™ RAY shoe is designed for elite runners, particularly forefoot runners, who want to start fast and finish faster. It incorporates super lightweight and bouncy FF LEAPââ™ technology at the midsole to promote powerful energy return in each step. The lightweight carbon plate helps you keep pace through the end of your race.
How do you know if you are a stride or cadence runner?
If youâre a stride runner, youâll notice you carry your hips higher, with your foot striking right under your hips. You may also notice that your torso moves up and down more with each stride. This is because you have a stronger push-off and more time in the air between steps.
Cadence runners tend to take quicker, more compact steps. If youâre a cadence runner, you may tend to carry your hips lower with your foot striking slightly in front of your hips. You also likely conserve energy with less up-and-down movement in your torso.

In the METASPEEDââ™ SKY racing shoe, the carbon plate is placed higher to give stride runners more bounce. In the METASPEEDââ™ EDGE shoe, itâs lower and has more of a curve for quicker step turnover and efficient transitions. The new METASPEEDââ™ RAY shoe features a minimal, lighter carbon plate for forefoot runners, giving you forward propulsion so you can maintain your pace from start to finish.
