ASICS Pronation Guide

What is Pronation?

Pronation refers to how your foot rolls inward to distribute impact when landing. It is a natural movement of the human body, but it varies from person to person. When your foot strikes the ground, it rolls inward to help absorb the shock. The arch of your foot supports, on average, three times your body weight. Around 60% of runners experience injuries due to ineffective shock absorption, which can occur if they roll inward too much or not enough. There are three main pronation types. Identifying your pronation type is the first step toward choosing the right running shoes.

Running shoes for Supination, Neutral Pronation or Overpronation

Supination

Supination

The outer side of the heel hits the ground at an increased angle with little or no inward rolling, resulting in more shock being transferred through the lower leg.

Neutral Pronation

Neutral Pronation

The foot lands on the outside of the heel, then rolls inward to absorb shock and support body weight.

Overpronation

Overpronation

The foot lands on the outside of the heel, then rolls inward too much, shifting the body weight to the inner edge instead of the ball of the foot.

While wear patterns can give you an idea of where you may need extra support and cushioning in your running shoes, it won’t provide the full picture. The best way of learning more about your foot type is through gait analysis, where video footage of your run is analyzed by an expert. This can be done in-store with one of our ASICS professionals.
