South Africa offers a diverse range of running races, catering to every type of runner, from city marathons to rugged trail races and to list them all or class them as a ‘top 10’ would be nearly impossible. We’re gauging the viability of a series on the most popular races in each province as chosen by our ASICS FrontRunners, but for now, here are a handful of the best running races in the country, each with its own unique appeal.

1. Comrades Marathon

Location: Durban to Pietermaritzburg (or the other way round for the 'down run')

Distance: Approximately 90 km

Type: Ultra Marathon

The Comrades Marathon is one of the most iconic ultra-marathons globally, attracting thousands of runners each year. Known as "The Ultimate Human Race," it alternates between an uphill and a downhill route each year. The race's history dates back to 1921, and it embodies a spirit of camaraderie and perseverance. 2. Sanlam Cape Town Marathon

Distance: 42.2 km

Type: Road Marathon

The Cape Town Marathon is Africa's only IAAF Gold Label Status marathon, making it a prestigious event in the running calendar. The scenic route in Cape Town offers runners a view of Table Mountain, the Atlantic Ocean and historical landmarks. The race is popular for its speedy course allowing runners to achieve their personal bests. In addition, the Cape Town Marathon prioritizes sustainability and social impact adding to its allure.

3. Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon

Distance: 56 km (Ultra Marathon) and 21.1 km (Half Marathon)

Type: Ultra Marathon and Half Marathon

The Two Oceans Marathon, often referred to as "the world's most beautiful marathon," is renowned for its breathtaking coastal scenery. Along with the Comrades is arguably one of SA’s iconic running races. Runners tackle a route that includes Chapmans Peak Drive with breathtaking scenery. There is also a half marathon option for those seeking a distance making it a highlight of South Africa’s running events held over Easter weekend.

4. Otter African Trail Run

Location: Tsitsikamma National Park

Distance: 42 km

Type: Trail Run

The Otter African Trail Run set in Tsitsikamma National Park offers a 42km trail running experience over the iconic 5-day hiking route of the same name. "The Grail of Trail " with its climbs, tricky descents and river crossings is a tough challenge and draws the world and the country's best. Yet the breathtaking coastal views, diverse plant and animal life and the immense feeling of achievement make every stride worthwhile. 5. Soweto Marathon

Location: Soweto, Johannesburg

Distance: 42.2 km (Full Marathon), 21.1 km (Half Marathon), 10 km

Type: Road Marathon

Dubbed "The Peoples Race" the Soweto Marathon celebrates South Africa’s vibrant cultural heritage and past. Runners traverse through Soweto’s streets passing by landmarks like the Hector Pieterson Memorial, Vilakazi Street and the famous FNB Stadium. With options for a marathon half marathon or 10 km run, this marathon caters to a diverse range of participants. The lively atmosphere, enthusiastic local backing and cultural immersion combine to create an experience, at the Soweto Marathon.
