Kids Running - Getting into the Sport
July 5, 2021
For a running parent, itâs a proud moment when your child decides that they want to join you. But remember, in their first few years of running, itâs all about having fun. Everything should be geared towards their enjoyment or thereâs a risk that theyâll fall out of love with running and give up. Whatever level theyâre at, winning or running too quickly shouldnât be the primary focus in the early days.
Starting to run
If your son or daughter wants to start running, a good first step is to take them out with you. Itâs a safe way for your child to start running and itâs the best way for you to pass on your enjoyment of the sport.
When youâre out with your child, remember a few golden rules:
- Keep it fun â they should always run with a smile on their face
- Be realistic about their abilities â donât take them too far or on technically demanding routes
- Explain what running is really about â itâs all about fun and improvement rather than instant success
- Donât force the pace â let your child dictate the speed and follow their lead
- Show off the local scenery â take the time to explore and appreciate the great outdoors during your run
Comfort is very important too, so make sure theyâre wearing the right shoes for their pronation type - the term used to describe the way their foot rolls in when they walk and run - and the sort of distances theyâre covering. You donât have to spend a fortune right away. We have ASICS kidsâ running shoes designed for beginners, such as the GEL-CUMULUSâą series or GT-1000âą , which are both excellent starting points.
The first race
If your son or daughter wants to start competing, there are plenty of junior races they can enter across the country. Itâll be an exciting step and perhaps their first experience of competitive sport.
For you as a spectator, there are a few things to remember:
- Choose the distance wisely â make sure your child can make it to the finish line
- Make it about fun, not winning â they should that know win or lose, youâre not disappointed
- Respect your childâs coaches â no child wants to see their parents and coach arguing
- Support and encourage â cheer on all the children racing, not just your own.

What else to consider when buying kidsâ running shoes
- Should I buy a larger size because childrenâs feet grow so quickly?
Childrenâs feet grow very quickly, but as with an adult, itâs extremely important that kidsâ running shoes fit properly to provide the necessary comfort, stability and support. Choosing shoes that fit properly will also help to prevent unnecessary movement and reduce the likelihood of blisters and other problems.
- Why our kidsâ running shoes are great for your childâs feet
We use the same high-quality, durable and innovative materials in our junior running shoes as we do in our adult editions, including shock-absorbing foam soles and our unique GELâą silicone to provide incredible cushioning. We also add extra features such as stability balance and guided support to ensure your kids' feet move safely and optimally.
- How do I know if my child under- or overpronates?
The signs and symptoms are the same as youâd expect to see in an adult. If your child overpronates, then they will land on the heel and roll excessively inwards. If they underpronate, they will land on the heel and roll excessively outwards. Read our guide to understand more about pronation.
