’Trust‘ is one of the key factors why I‘ve kept making it my ‘must pack’ shoe for those races. It has always had one of the most aggressive grip in the ASICS trail range accompanied by some serious protection built for the harshest of terrains.
First impressions upon unboxing? Well, it wasn’t the shoe I was expecting. The previous two iterations had been quite similar in design, both having quite a robust feel to them. The new ASICS Gel-Trabuco 9, with a total design overhaul as well as a rename (’Fuji’ removed) the design of the shoe is now is beyond recognisable. Picking it up the first time, the weight was noticeably much lighter having shedded 30g from its predecessor to 302g (men)/256g (Women).
The aesthetics of the shoe has been redesigned to what resembles a very sleek and streamlined look. The detailing on the cushioning now has aggressive indentations to reduce the drag on the shoe.
Modifications has also been made to the ASICSGRIP traction system. The ASICS Gel-Trabuco 9 now introduces a uphill and downhill directional lug. Cuts in the lugs gives extra traction whilst on the ascends as well as descends.
By redesigning the upper with lighter mesh and less stitching, this has saved the shoe an welcoming 30g. The toebox has also been reshaped offering more room.
Features that have been retained from the ASICS Gel-FujiTracbuco 8; 8mm drop, rock protection plate, lace pocket, DUOMAX stabilisation, FLYTEFOAM and GEL cushioning.
- Lighter than predeseccors
- DUOMAX Stabilisation for overpronator
- ASICSGRIP Directional Grip
- No benefits on compact trails
My biggest criticism with the previous iterations was it always felt very weighty. It was never a shoe you can take off/accelerate with ease. So, with the new weight and a better looking design, it definitely sends the message out that this is serious performance trail race shoe.
The reduction of weight hadn’t compromised the robustness of the shoe. It still feels just as sturdy and hasn’t lost its comfort. Both very much a key requirement for me when being outdoors for long periods.
With so many changes to the previous models, it was hard to believe that this is still part of the Gel-FujiTrabuco range. There were a lot of features that got me excited, i.e the various aesthetic details, the new ASICSGRIP directional lugs, the new lighter upper meshing etc.
Recommended to those who are looking for peace of mind with kit on big adventure runs or someone looking for a stable shoe for support and comfort for their ‘longish’ off road runs.
