This statement is so applicable to my running style and the way I think about my favourite sport. For anyone who knows me or follows me on social media, they will know that I am all about running in a way that benefits my overall happiness. It is the number 1 reason why I run. As far as I'm concerned, if you are running and it isn't contributing to improving your happiness and state of mind, you are doing it wrong.
Running in 2018
Running used to be such a simple activity. It involved putting on a pair of trainers, stepping outside and putting one foot in front of the other. In 2018 running can certainly throw a few extra elements into the mix...
Is your GPS watch charged? Have you got the sock marked 'L' on your left foot and the 'R' on your right?! Have you posted on your Instagram story to let everyone know that you are running? Will you update them with a positive outcome when you get back?
Why am I mentioning these things? Am I saying that there is something wrong with tracking your runs and wearing your socks on the correct feet? No, am I heck! Should you not post on Instagram? Well, I would be a bloody big hypocrite if I was to say that, I love a bit of Insta! My important message for running is simple...do what makes you happy.
Don't let the modern world cloud your running enjoyment
I see too many people who are beating themselves up because of goals they aren't achieving that they said they were aiming for on social media. Putting themselves under immense pressure because they wrote about a time they were trying to smash, or a distance they wished to complete, and they genuinely feel like they are letting people down when things don't go as planned. Social media is fantastic for sharing your passion, encouraging others and getting inspired, but don't get lost in the world of social media pressure. People who follow you with a genuine interest and share your encouraging attitude just want you to enjoy what you are doing. Anyone who doesn't fit that bill really doesn't matter. If you are running and worrying about what people online will think of your result, please take time to reflect on this because running is to be enjoyed, fact.
Remember why you run
Never lose sight of why you run, the reasons that you started putting one foot in front of the other. For me, running is a way of clearing the mind, taking in the fresh air, seeing beautiful scenery and socialising with people who have a common interest. I love to run hard and push for goals, but if I ever end up sacrificing any of my main reasons for running, then I have lost my way and I need to get back on track.
If my way of running is keeping me happy, I am of sound mind...and you can bet your ass that when I am of sound mind, my body will move to that beautiful beat just the same!
Sound mind...sound body.
Enjoy your running you sexy lot!
