Wandisile 'Wandi' Nongodlwana, an ASICS FrontRunner from South Africa, has achieved the impressive feat of completing all six Abbott World Marathon Majors, a prestigious challenge that takes runners across six world-renowned races in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York. For Wandi, each marathon was not only a test of physical endurance but a journey that broadened his perspective on running, culture, and resilience.
The Abbott World Marathon Majors represent the pinnacle of marathon running, and many athletes dream of completing this set to earn their "Six Star" medal. Each race presents its own atmosphere, terrain, and challenges, demanding a unique blend of speed, endurance, and mental fortitude. For Wandi, the journey began unexpectedly in 2019 when he ran his first Major in Chicago, initially inspired by a friend and a desire to raise funds for charity.
From Charity to a Life-Changing Mission
“I started off as a charity runner,” Wandi recalls. “My first Abbott Major was the Chicago Marathon in 2019. I ran it because a friend of mine from the U.S., Mike Clayton, committed to entering me. We ran the marathon to raise funds for the American Red Cross. At that time, I didn’t even know about the Abbott World Marathon Majors,” he admits.
Wandi’s impressive finish time of 2:50 in Chicago opened doors for him, allowing him to qualify for Boston and New York. “I realized that I had qualified for New York and Boston,” he shares, “and I was motivated to enter via my qualifying time.” However, as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe, the 2020 race calendar was upended, leading Wandi to defer his entries. Yet, his resolve only grew stronger, with Wandi eventually running his deferred races in 2021 and beyond.
The Marathon that Stood Out: Tokyo’s Unique Appeal
Each marathon offered its own highlights and challenges, but Tokyo was especially memorable for Wandi. “Tokyo Marathon is high up there in terms of atmosphere,” he explains. “The Japanese culture is completely different from South Africa, and everything felt new—from the food to the Japanese signage and the complex transport system. But once you figure it out, Tokyo is an incredibly clean and organized city.”
One particular sight struck Wandi on race day. “Most Japanese runners in the Tokyo Marathon were wearing ASICS shoes,” he notes, “which just showed how loyal they are to the brand and how much pride they take in it.” Supported by ASICS for his Tokyo entry, Wandi’s experience in Japan highlighted not only the excitement of the race but the deeper connections fostered by a shared passion for running.
Challenges and Triumphs Along the Way
The journey to becoming a Six Star Finisher wasn’t always smooth. In 2021, while trying to travel to Boston from South Africa during COVID-19 travel restrictions, Wandi faced a significant obstacle. South Africa was on a travel ban list for the United States, meaning Wandi had to make alternate plans. He recalls the intense journey:
“To get to the U.S., I would have had to travel to a country that was allowed entry to the U.S. and stay there for 14 days. When I arrived in Dubai, the authorities informed me that I couldn’t board the flight to the U.S. unless I either stayed in Dubai for 14 days or returned to South Africa. I was stuck in Dubai for two weeks and had to miss Boston that year,” he explains. Nevertheless, he managed to reach New York in time and ran a remarkable 2:37 finish.
An Unbreakable Support Network and the ASICS Community
The ASICS FrontRunner community has been a constant source of motivation and support for Wandi. Whether it’s gathering for shakeout runs or simply connecting with fellow runners worldwide, Wandi values the community’s spirit. “Each race I ran where there were ASICS FrontRunners or ambassadors, we’d meet up for shakeout runs. That provided such a great atmosphere and connection with others.”
Wandi also expresses deep gratitude for ASICS’ material support. “I’m so grateful to ASICS, not just for my entry to Tokyo, which is notoriously hard to get, but for providing me with the best running apparel and the MetaSpeed Sky racing shoes. My race times were, in part, a testament to the quality of the gear ASICS provided,” he says.
The Sixth Star and What Lies Ahead
Wandi’s journey to complete his Six Star challenge culminated with the London Marathon, where he took on the honor of pacing other runners. “It was an epic run and such an honor to be a pacer at such a prestigious event,” he says. “Finishing in London and receiving that final sixth star felt surreal.”
Now, with all six stars achieved, Wandi is already looking forward to new goals, including a planned return to the New York Marathon, this time competing in his age category.
Reflecting on his journey, Wandi sees running as a powerful force for unity and mental well-being. “Running is a worldwide unifying sport. It doesn’t discriminate—no matter your race, background, or belief. When you’re on the starting line, everyone is equal,” he says, reflecting on the global camaraderie he experienced at each race.
Wandi’s story is one of dedication, resilience, and the transformative power of running. Through the highs and lows, his journey exemplifies the spirit of the ASICS FrontRunner community and the unbreakable bond that running creates across cultures and continents.
