Our past, present and future

Since 1949, we've been committed to creating innovative and human-centric products that not only benefit people but the planet too.

Decades of innovation

Founded with a vision to uplift

After returning home from the war in 1945, Kihachiro Onitsuka started Onitsuka Co., Ltd in Kobe, Japan. He had the ambition to use sport to improve the physical and mental health of people, and recognised that sport had the power to do just that.

First basketball shoe released

The first shoe created by Onitsuka Co., Ltd. was a basketball shoe. Prototypes were repeatedly tested by leading basketball powerhouses and refined by Mr Onitsuka until the first model was released in the spring of 1950.

Inspired by an octopus' grip

One day, while eating octopus, Mr Onitsuka found a piece stuck to the bottom of his bowl. Inspired by the grip of the octopus tentacles, he designed a basketball shoe with suction cup-like features—the first of its kind.

Shoemaking for a barefoot Olympian

Abebe Bikila, the first Ethiopian gold medallist, caught the attention of Mr Onitsuka as he was known for running barefoot. After being invited to Japan as a guest runner at the Mainichi Marathon, Mr Onitsuka met Abebe to inspect his feet, get his measurements for a pair of shoes, and finally convinced him he could wear a shoe that felt the same as running barefoot. Abebe won the marathon.

ONITSUKA shoes shine at the Olympics

Onitsuka Co., Ltd made waves at the Olympics once again as Lasse Virén won gold in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres wearing ONITSUKA track and field spikes. After the race, he made a lap holding his shoes above his head.

Our company is officially formed

In July 1977, ONITSUKA Co., Ltd., GTO Co., Ltd., and JELENK Co., Ltd. merged to form ASICS Corporation. ASICS is an acronym inspired by the Latin phrase 'Mens Sana in Corpore Sano'. And although we replaced the word 'Mens' with "Anima" which means "vigorous mind", the essence of the phrase remains the same. Anima Sana In Corpore Sano – a Sound Mind in a Sound Body.

The ASICS Institute of Sport Science is established

The ASICS Institute of Sport Science (ISS) was established in 1985. It aims to analyse the natural movements of real athletes to create human-centric products that work with the body, not against it.

GEL™ technology is introduced

ASICS introduced GEL™ technology in 1990, revolutionising cushioning in athletic footwear. This innovation provided superior shock absorption and comfort for athletes.

Products inspired by people

The ASICS Institute of Sport Science (ISS) was established in 1985. It aims to analyse the natural movements of real athletes to create human-centric products that work with the body, not against it. Our ZERO DISTRACTION™ apparel is a great example of that. This range has been extensively tested at the ISS to help runners focus on what's important – their run. No chafing seams, shifting waistbands, dangling hoods, and sticky fabrics. Our scientists are constantly developing and researching unique materials that push the boundaries of innovation within the industry.

Human-centric design has been our unchanging research philosophy since the company started. We start by using computer simulation to design the structure and materials. We then get athletes to physically wear the products so we can conduct a functional evaluation. With the scientific insights we gain this way, we can keep creating products and services that enrich people’s lives.

Sound Mind, Sound Planet

We believe that a sound mind in a sound body needs a sound earth – one in which we can live, breathe, and move freely. That’s why we are actively considering the environmental impact of our products at every stage of their life cycle. To limit environmental waste, we are moving towards using mostly upcycled and recycled materials.

Future-focused minds

We are innovating for circularity—rethinking how shoes are made, used and remade. In 2024, we launched the NEOCURVE™ sneaker, made from our own discarded stock, and the NIMBUS MIRAI™ running shoe, designed to be remade. These breakthroughs reflect our step-by-step commitment to a more sustainable future—without compromising quality, comfort or performance, and always with people and planet in mind.

Eco-conscious innovation

By 2030 we want 100% recycled polyester to replace all polyester in our products. And we're well on our way.

Eco innovation icon 1

In 2021, 90% of new running shoes included recycled material. When it comes to the raw, natural materials we use in our apparel, we want to ensure that it is as sustainable as possible.

Eco innovation icon 2

That's why we're striving to source 100% more sustainable cotton by 2025. With concrete and realistic targets, we're striving to achieve a greener future, one shoe and one shirt at a time.

Eco innovation icon 3

Since 1949, our purpose has been to help people achieve a sound mind in a sound body. For this to happen, we need a sound earth. To make a positive impact on people and our planet for the next generation, we must take action to reduce CO2 emissions, embrace more sustainable materials and empower workers in the value chain.

A celebration of how far we’ve come

I am incredibly proud to reflect on the journey ASICS has taken since 1949—one built on purpose, innovation and the belief that movement has the power to uplift lives. From our earliest designs to today's product breakthroughs and circular innovations, that legacy continues to guide us. After all, it's in our nature—and our name. ASICS stands for 'Anima Sana In Corpore Sano' or 'a Sound Mind in a Sound Body'. Together, we move forward—shaping the future of sport, sustainability and wellbeing, one step at a time.
