The Blitzboks were heroic in recovering from an early defeat against Samoa to reach the final of the World Series Sevens in London.

The Blitzboks, currently the World Series holders, lost a magnificent final against current Olympic Champions Fiji 21-17. The defeat means Fiji now holds a seven point overall advantage over the Blitzboks with just one tournament to be completed. The two Sevens giants will square off next weekend in the finale in France.

The Blitzboks would have to win the tournament and hope Fiji don’t progress beyond the quarter-finals in order to retain the championship. The two teams have consistently been the best this season, but Super Rugby call-ups, Test selections and also several injuries have seriously derailed the South Africans.

Nevertheless, they should incredible courage and depth to beat New Zealand 14-7 in the quarter-final and then then emphatically dismiss the challenge of hosts England 29-19 in the semi-finals.
South Africa scored five tries to two.

Dylan Sage was the only South African to make the tournament’s Dream Team. Sage was particularly influential in the quarter-final and semi-final wins.
