Today the Springbok rugby squad departed for Japan. It was an emotional send-off for the Boks with hordes of adoring fans showing their support.

The programme started at 10h30 at the parking lot in front of the international departure area at the OR Tambo International Airport.

“It is a huge honour for all of us to play in the upcoming tournament and we are very grateful for the amazing support from all over South Africa. We are  there to make South Arica proud,” said captain Siya Kolisi at the press conference on the day of the departure.

The Boks carry the hope of a Nation on their shoulders and few are more aware of this than Tendai “Beast” Mtawarira - the most-capped member of the current squad. The Beast spoke about bringing his experience to the squad, especially for players who were new to the intensity of the tournament with it’s high stakes.

Minister of Sport Nathi Mtweta added his voice, highlighting how good it would be for nation building were the Springboks to bring the Web Ellis trophy home.

“We want them to be the first team to win the tournament on three different continents and we wish them well for the tournament in Japan,” said Minister Mthethwa.

Director of rugby, Rassie Erasmus thanked the fans for coming out and also said “We’d like to say ‘thank you to South Africa’ for the support and best wishes they have shown the Springboks this week”.

The Springboks play Japan in a warm-up match on Friday, 6 September and then open their pool games against New Zealand two weeks later, on 21 September.
