ASICS FrontRunners are known for their achievements on the track, but they also make strides in other areas of life. One such example is Asande Vilane, who co-hosted the prestigious Inside a Researcher’s Mindset (IRM) event in Cape Town in 2024. Co-founder of the African Research Society (ARS), Vilane brought Nobel Laureate Professor Joachim Frank to the stage, where they explored the mindset behind groundbreaking scientific discoveries.
Vilane’s passion for science is clear: “We believe African problems require African solutions, and that starts with up-skilling the youth.” Through ARS, she aims to make research accessible to students across the continent, empowering future leaders to tackle Africa’s unique challenges. IRM, held annually, offers young African researchers an exclusive opportunity to engage with Nobel Prize winners, uncovering the person behind the science and learning what it takes to reach the pinnacle of scientific achievement.
Reflecting on the event, Vilane said, “Getting to co-host these events has been an immense privilege. Hearing from minds like Professor Frank has inspired not just me, but many young people to pursue scientific careers.” The 2024 edition of IRM marked a significant milestone for ARS, as it was the first time the society secured funding to bring a Nobel Laureate to Cape Town for an in-person event.
Founded in 2022, ARS initially focused on medical research, but quickly expanded to include university students from various fields. “Many young people felt excluded because they weren’t members of the medical fraternity,” explained Vilane. “In response to this demand, we rebranded as ARS to make research accessible to all African students.” This evolution reflects Vilane’s commitment to inclusivity and fostering a love for science among the youth.
Outside of her medical studies, Vilane is also a dedicated ASICS FrontRunner. Balancing her passion for running with her commitment to education and science, she’s a shining example of how ASICS FrontRunners lead fulfilling lives beyond the sport. Her involvement in both worlds highlights the values of perseverance, resilience, and community—qualities that define both successful athletes and groundbreaking researchers.
Through her work with ARS and events like IRM, Vilane is not only making an impact in the running community but also in the world of research and education. Her story reminds us that ASICS FrontRunners are about more than just running—they’re inspiring change in every part of their lives.
