The Run Jozi Crew is a community of vibrant, energetic individuals whose love for running embodies the lifeblood and soul of Johannesburg. Founded by two passionate ASICS Frontrunners, Mbalenhle Gumbi and Kamo Motaung, this club—Run Jozi Crew—isn’t just about running; it’s about fostering personal growth, community spirit, and mental health awareness through the transformative power of running.
“Run Jozi was conceptualised from a need we noticed in the Joburg running community,” explained Mbali. Both Mbali and Kamo had recognised a gap – the lack of collaboration among JHB running crews. A performance-driven approach, and, most importantly, safety. “At the heart of Run Jozi is a desire to empower runners with the knowledge and training to get them from where they are to where they want to go. We want people to come together and grow in each other’s company,” said Kamo. Thus, they set out to create a team of runners who share the same values to support runners at all levels.
Run Jozi is not exclusively for professional runners; it caters to anyone with a passion for running, regardless of their level. Mbali says, “The Run Jozi Crew is a performance running club and a community where every step taken is a leap towards realising and achieving individual dreams.” Its mission is to continue inspiring and developing runners as they work towards the realisation of their goals, whether it’s completing their first 5K, recording a personal best in a 10K, or simply enjoying the camaraderie of group runs.
Core Objectives and Activities
Run Jozi has clear objectives: to help athletes achieve their dreams and reach the pinnacle of performance excellence, while also empowering the community.
These goals are supported by a structured weekly schedule of training runs:
Technique Tuesdays: Alternating between more taxing hill workouts and social 5K runs, allowing participants to connect with fellow runners.
Track Thursdays: Sessions at the UJ Athletics Track, ideal for those preparing for marathons or keen to improve their technique and speed.
Sweat Saturdays: Long run days focused on building an endurance base, with distances ranging from 10K to 21K.
The goal is not only to improve fitness but also to build a sense of community. “Running is a community sport,” Mbali says, “and it’s so much better and more enjoyable to achieve goals as a community and to run as a community.”
Those wishing to join Run Jozi Crew are warmly welcomed; all they need to do is register on the crew’s Instagram page and join the Whatsapp Channel. With training sessions held on most days of the week, there are plenty of opportunities for runners to engage and improve within this emerging community.
Beyond the physical aspects, Run Jozi is also dedicated to raising awareness about mental health. By providing an environment where members can achieve their individual goals while connecting with other like-minded individuals, Run Jozi aims to make a positive impact both physically and mentally on its members’ lives. Its sense of community, support, inclusivity, and personal growth make Run Jozi more than just a crew. Whether you’re looking to push your limits, make new friends with fellow runners, or simply get out on the streets—Run Jozi offers a platform for exactly that.
