Guide for buying running socks
There are various types of running socks for women and men, with different lengths, materials, shapes, colours and sizes to choose between. The following guide will walk you through what socks to wear when running and the considerations you need to bear in mind.
Think about the kind of running you do
Different kinds of running require different kinds of socks. The best running socks for marathons will be very different to the kind of socks you would need for sprinting on a track, which are in turn different to trail running socks.
When choosing running socks, you should therefore think about the following kinds of factors:
- What surfaces do you normally run on? Is it road, trail, track or treadmill?
- Do you run short, medium or long distances?
- Do you mainly run on treadmills at the gym or outdoors?
- Do you live somewhere where it is often rainy and cold (in which case waterproof running socks would be ideal) or do you run mainly in dry and hot conditions?
- What season will you be running in? In winter, you might want longer socks, in summer shorter running ankle socks will keep you cooler
- If you run on trails, then the best trail running socks will give you more protection as they are longer and thicker, reducing the risk of scratches from bushes
These factors will influence the kind of running socks you choose.
Think about any foot issues you have
Do you notice that you get foot problems when running? Perhaps you always get blisters in the same place, pain in your arches or simply suffer from smelly socks? There are specific kinds of running socks that can address these sorts of problems. For example, the best anti-blister running socks include a variety of features that reduce rubbing and discomfort, while cushioned running socks can support your arches.
Avoid cotton running socks&
Many socks are made from cotton. While this is fine for regular footwear, it is not appropriate for running. Cotton has a tendency to absorb moisture which means that any sweat released from your feet will be absorbed into the socks. This moisture will result in extra friction and can lead to blisters. It can also make your feet feel hotter in summer and colder in winter. And of course, cotton absorbs and retains unpleasant odours.
Choose specialised materials
Most running socks will be made from synthetic fibres like polyester and nylon or high-quality natural fibres like merino wool. These materials wick away sweat while also being durable and breathable.
ASICS running socks mens and ASICs running socks womens are principally made from materials like polyester and nylon which are sweat wicking and which keep your feet cool and dry.
Avoid socks with seams
If there are seams on your socks, this creates additional points for rubbing and friction to occur. Try to choose running socks that do not have any seams. For example, ASICS Kayano running socks provide a seamless ride.
Choose socks with extra padding
The best socks for running will provide extra padding on the soles of your feet. If you notice your feet are often sore after a run, investing in a pair with extra thick padding could minimise this discomfort. Athletic socks have been shown to reduce the impact of running on your feet by up to 20%.
Running sock thickness
The main difference between thick and thin running socks is that thicker socks will provide more cover in winter, while thinner socks will keep your feet cooler in summer.

Length of your running socks
Choosing between short or long running socks depends on the kind of running you do. Shorter socks and running ankle socks will of course allow for more air circulation over your legs whilst you are running, so are generally preferable when running indoors or in the summer. On the other hand, long running socks keep you warmer in the cold months. The best trail running socks also tend to be longer as they can help protect your legs from scratches if you run past bushes.

Blister prevention features
If you notice that you often get blisters when running, you may want to consider ‘double’ or twin skin running socks which are specially designed to prevent blisters. These socks come with an inner and outer layer of material which means that any rubbing that happens causes friction between the sock material, rather than against your skin. Scientific studies indicate they may help reduce the amount of blisters you experience.
Compression socks for running
Compression running socks use specific kinds of structuring in the material to apply additional pressure to your muscles. It is believed that wearing compression socks when running can improve blood circulation and therefore help you run more efficiently. Another reason why wearing compression socks when running helps, is that research suggests it could improve your recovery time.
Anti-odour features
The best running socks contain features which help tackle the unpleasant odours that are often associated with running socks. These kinds of socks will contain mesh materials which improve breathability, as well as antibacterial qualities that can prevent the build-up of unpleasant smells.
