Shoes for Trail Running: Do I need them?

If your runs are starting to include trails, gravel paths, forest tracks, or mountain routes, you might be asking: do I need trail running shoes? The short answer: If you’re regularly running off-road, then yes- trail running shoes can make a big difference to your comfort, grip, and safety.

Here’s how to know if trail running shoes are right for you - and what features to look for if they are.

1. How Trail Shoes Differ from Road Running Shoes

Trail running shoes are purpose-built for uneven, unpredictable, and often muddy or rocky terrain. Compared to road running shoes, they typically offer:

    • Grippier outsoles with deep lugs for traction on soft, loose, or uneven ground
    • Reinforced uppers to protect your feet from rocks, sticks, and debris
    • Stable platforms to help prevent ankle rolls on uneven surfaces
    • Protective features like toe guards and rock plates

    2. When You Do Need Trail Running Shoes

    Trail shoes are recommended if:

    • You run regularly on trails, bush tracks, gravel, or technical terrain
    • Your road shoes are slipping or getting damaged off-road
    • You feel unstable or your ankles roll on uneven surfaces
    • You’re running in wet or muddy conditions
    • You’re training for a trail race or ultra event

If you run mostly on well-groomed paths with the occasional trail section, a hybrid shoe like the Nature Bathing Collection might be enough. Our Nature Bathing Range features our core running models, the NOVABLAST, GT-2000, and GEL-NIMBUS, but with an aggressive outsole.

Not all trail shoes are the same - choose based on your terrain and running style.

    Why It Matters

Reinforced toe caps shield you from stubs and rocks

    Rock Plate

A firm insert in the sole protects against sharp stones

    Waterproof

    Snug Fit

Prevents slipping or movement on inclines and descents

    Durability

    4. When Road Shoes Might Be Enough

You may not need trail shoes if:

    1. You only run on well-maintained paths or light gravel roads
    2. Your road shoes provide enough grip for your routes
    3. You prefer lighter, more flexible footwear and don’t need extra protection

However, if you start to feel the impact of rocks, slip in the mud, or wear out your road shoes quickly, that’s your signal to upgrade.
