Can women wear men's running shoes?

While it's possible for women to wear men's running shoes, it's not a practice we would advise as it could increase the risk of injury. Here at ASICS, we design our trainers specifically for women, to be perfectly suited to their body shape and running style. We’ve carried out years of research to design running shoes that specifically accommodate women’s feet. However, some women may still want to choose men's running shoes for their appearance, wider fit or feel.

Are women's running shoes different to men's?

Our women’s and men’s running shoes are different to one another because men's and women's feet have different proportions and shapes. Women's feet tend to be wider at the forefoot, with a narrower ankle and heel. We designed our women's running shoes to accommodate these differences. You’ll find differences in several elements of our men’s and women’s running shoes, including in their size and fit, cushioning, arch support, width, weight, construction and heel-to-toe drop.

What are the best running shoes for women?

Selecting the best running shoes for women depends on how you intend to use them, as well as your running style, foot shape and pronation style. We would recommend that you analyse your gait when choosing running shoes, because knowing your running style plays a crucial part in selecting the right shoe for you. Our knowledgeable ASICS team are available in-store or online, to help you with sizing and diagnostic offerings, including pronation assessment, supination analysis, and pressure distribution evaluations, all aimed at helping you to discover the perfect pair of running shoes for you. How to choose women's running shoes?

Choosing the right women's running shoe depends on a large range of factors. A major consideration is the shoe's intended use (whether you're using them for everyday running, long distance races, trails etc.) You should also consider your arch height, pronation type, level of cushioning needed, breathability, water resistance (if required), heel counter, and foot shape. Our shoe finder will help you narrow down your options - you just answer some simple questions, and it recommends the best shoe for you.

How often should I replace my running shoes?

After a while, a shoe's structure and effectiveness will decline, leading to a loss of stability and support. How quickly a shoe deteriorates varies based on factors such as the total distance you run, how you run, running frequency, the surface you run on, care and maintenance and the weather. As a guideline, it's advisable to replace your running footwear approximately every 400 to 500 miles. Read our blog post, ‘When to Replace your Running Shoes?’, for more information.
