ASICS Athlete Michaela Sokolich-Beatson

Overcoming Career Obstacles with Michaela Sokolich-Beatson

Michaela Sokolich-Beatson is known for being an incredibly hard worker on the court as a tough defender with the Northern Mystics and in 2018 representing New Zealand as a Silver Fern. But the court is missing her for the time being as she’s in the midst of one of the biggest challenges of her life - recovering from not one, but two ruptured Achilles. In January of 2020 she ruptured her right achilles tendon and after being cleared to resume training in October was plagued with the same injury to the left. Although this has meant she can’t play netball for two years she’s not letting it damper her recovery or plans for returning. Michaela has been working through it by being vocal when she needs support and ensuring she takes it one step at a time. “The way I am overcoming this challenge is by talking to people, reaching out for help and having a plan in place that is individual and achievable for me.”

Through the process of physical therapy, Michaela has been a fervent voice on how the journey of healing from injury is different for everyone. Bouncing back for one person won’t always be as easily achievable for another and she strives to help others understand how important it is to heal in time. She also knows how important it is to look after her mind, allowing the time and space to focus on other things.

“I maintain a sound mind by taking some time for myself, that might be connecting with friends or family, walking along the beach with my dog, or sitting down with a hot Milo watching some TV.”

Her advice for other’s striving for a career as an athlete, “If becoming a professional athlete is something you really want to achieve I believe it is important to try, try, and try again. It is also super important to make sure you are doing it because you want it for you, this will allow you to keep in it for the long run.” Throughout training, she focuses on her love for the game and finds inspiration in seeing how much further her potential can reach. “I know that I still have a long way to go in improving my game. Knowing this motivates me to train purposefully each day.”

GEL-PURSUE 7

“From a very young age my Dad always provided us with top quality footwear, he believed it was important to take care of our feet and legs when playing sport to minimise injury and be comfortable. I’ve taken his philosophy into my life. My favourite ASICS footwear is anything GT1000 or GT2000. However, while I am returning from injury I need a neutral shoe for running so I am currently wearing the Gel-Pursue 7.”
