2023 marks the 25th anniversary of the GEL-NIMBUS® series and the launch of the GEL-NIMBUS® 25 . In our continued for pursuit for a Sound Mind in a Sound Body™, we have continued to develop on our technology in running shoes. While our first ever GEL-NIMBUS® running shoe was released in 1999, and we have continued to improve on it since. Now, in 2023, we’re thrilled to unveil the 25th iteration of the model.
So how far have we come with the GEL-NIMBUS® 25?
The First GEL-NIMBUS®
The construction of the first GEL-NIMBUS® shoe in 1999 was focused on comfort–it was designed to feel as if you were running on clouds (hence the name). With long runs in mind, it was built to be cushioned, breathable and suited for neutral pronators. It featured a relatively new technology that was first developed in 1986, the ASICS GEL™ technology , designed to offer extra shock absorption. Compared to our first ever marathon shoe from 1953, the Marathon Tabi, it’s safe to say that the GEL-NIMBUS® model from ‘99 was a massive improvement.
Put to the Test
25 years later, the improvements continue, and we put it to the test. ASICS commissioned an independent study to see just how comfortable the GEL-NIMBUS® 25 is. The Biomechanics Lab in South Australia completed a study with 100 runners to compare the comfort of the GEL-NIMBUS® 25 against its competitors. The results? It was rated to be the most comfortable running shoe*.
How did we do it? We took comfort to another level. The GEL-NIMBUS® 25 shoe introduces a new form of cushioning, PureGEL™ technology , lighter and softer than its predecessors. Featuring FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO cushioning , this model has the most underfoot cushioning of any model. Now that’s taking 25 years of comfort to new heights, literally.

The GEL-NIMBUS® series isn’t just about comfort, they’ve got style. From our Sportstyle collection , the GEL-NIMBUS® 9 sneakers have been making a splash, even over a decade after their release. First released in 2007, it has reemerged as a hit in the 2020s. Featuring an industrial look with bold contrasting colors, it still retains the cushioning and comfort the model is known for.
In the 25th model, the GEL-NIMBUS® 25 colorways offer an enormous variety of choice. Whether you choose to run bright and flashy, classic black and white or tastefully subtle, it has it all.
What’s the difference between the GEL-NIMBUS® 24 and the GEL-NIMBUS® 25?
At first glance, it's hard to miss the height difference. The GEL-NIMBUS® 24 had a heel height of 26mm in men’s and 28mm in women’s while the GEL-NIMBUS® 25 boasts 41.5mm and 40.5mm respectively. Despite the large difference in height, the newest model doesn’t compromise on weight. For a men’s size 9, it is approximately 292g, merely 2g heavier than its predecessor. For a women’s 8, it weighs approximately 260g, just 13g heavier.
In its construction, the GEL-NIMBUS® 25 has the above-mentioned new and improved cushioning technology, but that’s not all. Even wearing the shoe is now more comfortable with an updated knit tongue and collar design.
