Preparation and training for any athletic event are critical, and several factors will contribute to your success in a track meet. Training, diet, recovery, and mindset are all important contributors that can make a significant difference in performance in competition, and you should have a healthy balance of all. Prepare for your upcoming track meet with the following tips for performance, endurance, and recovery.
Sleep and Recovery
Getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep at night can make a huge difference in your body recovering properly and being physically ready for training and competition. Scientific literature shows even a small amount of sleep loss can negatively impact performance. Being well rested will help you have energy for competition and the training associated with your preparation.

Basic Preparation
Depending on your event, your training should be structured in such a way that you are at your peak performance during the competition. Depending on if you’re a distance runner or sprinter, you should taper off your training in a specific way where your body will be recovered and ready to compete. It is unwise to train hard or harder than you normally would the week before a competition. You should still be active and moving leading up to your competition to retain the gains you made during your training, but not going so hard that you are hindered physically and mentally for your event.

Hydration
Hydration is a key aspect for any athlete. Depending on the distance, you may need to simply hydrate before and after. For half and full-marathon runners, you may need to consider hydrating before, during, and after the event. For long-distance athletes, you may even need to go further and consume energy gels or some other fuel during a race.

Mental Preparation
It may be difficult not to feel pressure and nerves before or during a competition. However, try to be kind to yourself and relax in the time before the competition. Visualizing success can help you gain confidence and allow you to perform at your best. Try to think about the competition coming up and ponder on all the training and preparation you’ve done that will allow you to be successful.

Stretching and Mobility
In the week leading up to competition, it is a good idea to run through some mobility work daily to lengthen your muscles and make sure you’re physically feeling your best. You can do static stretching or dynamic exercises. This is just another way you can stay moving and keep your body feeling good and prepared for competition.

Heading Into Competition
Now that you’ve done everything to prepare for your meet, race day is when you take all of your preparation and show what you can do. This should be a positive experience. Meet day should be exciting, and you can allow yourself to have fun while staying focused. Have confidence in the amount of preparation you’ve done, and enjoy running and competing.
