Movement for the Mind: ASICS Athletes & Team Members Share Their Stories

May 1, 2025

At ASICS, mental wellness is part of our founding philosophy: Anima Sana In Corpore Sano, which translates to a Sound Mind in a Sound Body. In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we talked to three members of the ASICS family about how movement—along with other habits and routines—has helped them achieve a sound mind in their daily lives.

ASICS Athlete Nate Tucker

Nate Tucker

ASICS Professional Athlete

At 10 years old, Nate Tucker’s life permanently changed when a head injury caused paralysis on the right side of his body. His doctors told him he would have limited mobility and likely wouldn’t play competitive sports again. Determined to prove them wrong, he spent the following months re-learning how to walk; and eventually, to run. Now, running is both his career and a cornerstone of his mental wellness routine.

“I started running as therapy after my traumatic brain injury, and now it's a job,” says Nate. “It's certainly evolved over time, but there's no better stress reliever than going for a run with no distractions on my favorite trail.”

When running is a job, work brings some unique challenges—like competing on the world’s stage. Nate has represented his country twice at the Paralympic Games, earning medals in the T38 1500m race both times. Even with months of preparation, it’s a high-pressure event.

“When I feel pressured during big competitions, I use meditation and comedy as outlets,” he says. He also works to reframe the pressure as a reminder of success. “I frequently remind myself that the pressure I feel means I’m where I’ve always wanted to be. Something I’ve dreamed of since I was a kid!”

Outside of running, Nate finds that grounding himself in a consistent routine helps him achieve a sound mind. “I am anchored to my morning routine, which includes a cold shower, a mile walk, guided meditation, and breathwork." Like a training program for his mind, these habits help to keep his mental and physical wellness in sync. “When I’m at my best, my mind and body are aligned, which is what I strive for. I sometimes fall short in reality. The mind must be worked like a muscle!”

ASICS Athlete Johnny Gregorek

Retired ASICS Professional Athlete

For Johnny Gregorek, Sound Mind, Sound Body is a way of life. “Running has always been a way that I find peace, process emotions, and connect with nature,” he says, “In turn, my life outside of running feels balanced when I am taking care of my body. Movement is vital for mental clarity.”

In 2020, Johnny utilized running as a way to honor his brother Patrick, who lost his battle with mental illness at age 21. The result was an event that he felt Patrick, who enjoyed running for the fun of it, would have liked to see: a 1-mile run at full speed wearing blue jeans.

“I started the Blue Jean Mile as a way to pay tribute to my brother, Patrick, and to raise awareness for mental health resources,” says Johnny, “I ran a world record for the mile in blue jeans and thought it would be a one-time event. However, my family, friends, ASICS, and the running community at large have grown the Blue Jean Mile into a mental health awareness movement. I’m so grateful for that.”

Five years after Johnny’s world record, the ASICS Blue Jean Mile continues to make an impact, inspiring conversations about mental illness and donations for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Anybody can get involved, regardless of running experience. “You can run one alone, with a friend, or even with your whole team,” says Johnny, “Don't worry about trying for a world record, just have fun!”

After 18 years of competitive running, Johnny announced his retirement in 2025. Although he's not training for competitions, he still incorporates sports—including some new ones—into his routine. “I still make sure I am getting some sort of exercise every day for my mental and physical health. I run, hike, lift weights, play basketball, and I even started playing golf with my dad and sister!”

ASICS Business Analysis Manager Kaitlyn O’Donoghue

Kaitlyn O’Donoghue

Manager, Business Analysis at ASICS

With over 5 years of experience working at ASICS, Kaitlyn O’Donoghue knows that Sound Mind, Sound Body is more than a tagline: it’s a philosophy that she puts into action every day.

“I think a healthy mind and body are closely linked,” she says, “When we prioritize our physical health—through exercise, healthy eating, and rest—we lay the groundwork for better mental health. Similarly, taking care of our mental state can lead to improvements in our physical condition. Each aspect really does support and uplift the other in a positive way.”

At first, Kaitlyn incorporated exercise into her routine for physical health benefits. But she soon discovered that movement helped her manage feelings of anxiety she had experienced throughout her life. “Since making exercise a regular part of my routine, I've noticed a significant impact on my mental wellness and overall happiness,” she says, “Being active has become a powerful tool for reducing my anxiety and improving my overall mood. It gives me a sense of control and accomplishment that helps counteract anxious feelings.”

So, what does Kaitlyn’s exercise routine look like? Anything but routine. “Some weeks, I’m all about Pilates and yoga, while other weeks I love going for a long run. When the weather is warm and sunny, I prefer running outdoors, but when it’s not, I turn to indoor workout classes. I enjoy keeping my routine fresh to avoid getting bored.”

Running and workout classes aren’t the only way that Kaitlyn takes care of her mental wellness. She also finds comfort in connecting with the people around her. “One of the main habits I focus on for achieving a sound mind is building relationships and connecting with others," she says, “I make it a point to take part in various clubs and social activities. These interactions not only brighten my day, but also help me feel more grounded and supported, which plays a big role in my overall mental wellness.”
