Running Medicine with Dr. Jordan Metzl: Plantar Fasciitis

NOV. 04, 2021
Welcome back to Running Medicine with Dr. Jordan Metzl.

This month we explore Plantar Fasciitis, an injury that strikes fear into runners around the world. Lucky for us, we have Dr. Metzl to help educate us on Plantar Fasciitis, including the common causes, treatments and preventions.

As a runner, Plantar Fasciitis can sometimes be easily identified as an achy foot. But what causes Plantar Fasciitis? Dr. Metzl teaches us that it can be caused by problems in the foot, such as pronation, or even a weakened or untrained calf muscle. So how do we treat Plantar Fasciitis? Dr. Metzl explains that we must first treat the pain and then seek out treating the cause. This can include changing the shoes we run in to fix pronation or recommending a strength training program to strengthen our calf muscles. Lastly, can Plantar Fasciitis be prevented? Dr. Metzl shares several tactics that can help prevent Plantar Fasciitis, including foam rolling and stretching out the foot and calf.

Check out the video below to hear Dr. Metzl himself go into detail about Plantar Fasciitis.
