How to Layer for Cold Weather Running

October 23, 2025

When days get shorter and temps get lower, getting dressed for a run requires a little extra planning. Whether you need to trap heat, wick away rain, stand out in the dark, or all three at once, ASICS has the layers you need to keep moving when the forecast is less-than-ideal.

Layering basics

Generally, cold weather layering is divided into three categories:

  • A base layer that’s fitted and moisture-wicking
  • A middle layer for insulation
  • An outer shell if necessary to protect against wind, rain, or extra-low temps

In the fall, you’ll probably only need two layers, especially if the second one is made with a heavyweight or thermal fabric. One rule of thumb is to dress like it’s 15-20 degrees warmer than the actual temperature outside. The start of your run will feel chilly, but your body will warm up fast!

The base layer

Both the top and bottom pieces of your base layer (sometimes called a “second skin”) should sit snug to your body, keep sweat under control, and offer lightweight protection against wind and cold. ASICS styles like the SPORT WINTER TIGHT deliver close-fitting comfort with a stretchy, quick-drying synthetic fabric. They even include zipper pockets to safely store your phone, keys, and other small essentials. For early morning or late-night runs, the ROAD LITE-SHOW™ TIGHT adds extra reflective details for enhanced visibility in the dark.

The middle layer

Next, it’s time to add a middle layer that's tailored to the temperature. These pieces should have a slightly looser fit and fabric that will keep you warm, but not too warm.

If it's an in-between day (you know, the ones that go from sweater weather to sweat weather), stick to a top that's lightweight and breathable like the ROAD SEAMLESS LONG SLEEVE TOP. This shirt features ACTIBREEZE™ technology for targeted ventilation in high-sweat zones, so you won’t feel too hot once the sun comes out.

If the cold calls for something more rugged, you can swap in the ROAD WINTER LONG SLEEVE HOODIE. This hoodie fights the chill with a cozy knit fabric, high-neck design, and thumbholes to keep your sleeves snug and secure throughout your run.

The outer shell

If wind, rain, or below-freezing temperatures start creeping in, it's time to break out the outer shell. This extra layer should have a waterproof or water repellant fabric that will keep you dry throughout your run. ASICS outerwear like the ROAD WINTER JACKET delivers heavy-duty protection, with a brushed thermal fabric that repels water and stands up to biting cold. If that sounds a bit too toasty, you can choose the more lightweight ROAD LITE-SHOW™ PACKABLE JACKET. This jacket is easy to remove and pack into your pocket once you’re warmed up, and its reflective details help keep you visible in low-light conditions.

Stay moving this season

Running when it’s cold and gloomy outside isn’t always the most appealing. But we believe that when you move your body, you move your mind. With the right layers, venturing into the elements could go from a daunting challenge to a refreshing change of pace.
