What to Pack in Your Gym Bag

What to Pack in Your Gym Bag

August 22, 2024

Alexander Graham Bell once said, "Before anything else, preparation is the key to success," and that sentiment can extend to your workouts. If you're heading out to the gym —or track or pool or trails or field or court — making sure you're prepared can help set you up for a successful workout in which you stay comfortable, healthy, and hydrated. That's why packing your gym bag is so important, and while exactly what you pack will vary based on your own unique needs, there are some items that everyone should bring along when they exercise.

Staying hydrated when you're active can be important if you want to enhance your performance, prevent illness and injury, and recover well from your workouts. The University of Colorado recommends drinking a cup of water five to 10 minutes before you exercise and a cup of water 15 to 20 minutes, especially if you're exercising outdoors in warm weather, while you're active to ensure you stay hydrated. Packing a water bottle in your gym bag can help you stay on track. Consider purchasing a reusable one to save you money in the long run and to lessen your impact on the environment. Also, make sure it has a secure lid that prevents water from spilling out into your bag and ruining your other items.

Headphones or earbuds

Listening to music when you work out may boost your mood, motivate you to keep going among other benefits. Look for a pair of earbuds or headphones that are water and sweat-resistant and easy to secure so you can use them while staying active. Don't forget to charge them up the night before you exercise; keep an extra charger in your gym bag too.

Shoes and socks

Make sure you bring appropriate footwear to your workout, especially if you show up at the gym in your street clothes. Activity-specific shoes can help you stay comfortable and support your feet so that you're less likely to get injured. Inappropriate footwear may lead to a whole host of issues.

You'll also want to keep a couple of pairs of extra socks in your gym bag just in case you need them. Consider an option like the highly-rated ASICS Unisex Speed No Show 2P. The low-cut sock is great for training, particularly keeping your feet cool and moisture-free during your workouts. Another great option is a pair of the ASICS Team Crew Socks, which were designed with team sports in mind. Not only do they absorb shock when you're on the field or court, but they come in a variety of colors to match your uniforms.

Extra clothes

If you shower at the gym, you probably don't want to put your sweaty workout clothes back on your clean body, and if you have to go somewhere after you leave the gym, you probably don't want to wear them out in public, so always include some extra clothes in your gym bag, including underwear. If you have longer hair, throw in some hair ties, sweat bands, or a hat to keep it out of your face. The ASICS Unisex PF Cap is a great option due to its moisture-wicking properties and a shape that will shield your face from the sun during outdoor activities.

Hygiene items

Speaking of showering, consider packing any hygiene items you might need, like shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, and a hairbrush or comb. Also consider your own individual needs, like medications you may need to take, menstrual products, and items like makeup or hair care if you plan to go somewhere else after you leave the gym.

Post workout snacks

Don't forget to pack some post-workout snacks, especially if you're not going straight home for a meal. Some easy and portable ideas include a turkey sandwich, protein bars or shakes, healthy smoothies, and yogurt with fruit like berries or bananas.

Don't forget that the bag you buy can be as important as the contents inside. The ASICS Packable Tote is a good option because it's spacious and practical yet easy to pack up for storage or travel when needed. If you prefer a spacious and convenient backpack with straps designed for comfort, consider the ASICS Team Backpack. You can even personalize it with your team logo if you play a team sport.
