Our Brand Heritage
Since our beginning, ASICS has been built on the philosophy Sound Mind, Sound Body™. Our founder, Kihachiro Onitsuka, believed physical activity was an essential part of overall wellbeing.
He started ASICS to make sportswear that would support every athlete, inspire movement and encourage everyone to have an active lifestyle.
Our Founder
1949 Kobe, Japan was in shambles following WWII. Many Japanese youth lost hope for the future. Our founder, Kihachiro Onitsuka, knew he had to do something to uplift the younger generations. Onitsuka decided to start making athletic footwear that would promote an active lifestyle among the youth.
OK Basketball Shoe
The OK Basketball Shoe was the start of it all for the brand as the very first ASICS product. At this time basketball shoes were difficult to make, but that did not deter Onitsuka - instead, it inspired him. He gave early prototypes to basketball leagues in Kobe for wear testing. It was refined and released to the public in the spring of 1950.
Tiger Stripes
The Tiger Stripes debuted on the world stage for the very first time at the 1968 Games. The stripes are reminiscent of the waves off the coasts of Kobe, the city where the ASICS first made its roots.
Advancements in Technology
GEL-LYTE™ III
The GEL-LYTE™ III initially launched as a lightweight, stable running shoe. It has evolved over time into a classic everyday model. The shoes most notable features include a split tongue design and 3-layer midsole.
Birth of Our Legends
GEL-NIMBUS®
The GEL-NIMBUS® model was designed to feel like you're running on clouds. It is constructed with comfort and breathability for long runs with a focus on neutral pronation. The shoe is now on its 25th version.
METARIDE™
GUIDESOLE™ technology debuted with the revolutionary METARIDE™ shoe. The METARIDE™ shoe has an innovative rocker sole designed to help you expend less energy while running, giving you a smooth, comfortable ride.
