ASICS Carbon Footprint

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases generated over a product’s life cycle. We’re committed to reducing our CO₂ emissions throughout the value chain, so we’re being transparent about how we measure and continuously work to reduce our emissions.

We care about our emissions

We measure the carbon emissions at each stage of a product’s life cycle. Below, we’ve explained the carbon footprint
of our GEL-KAYANO™ 32 shoe, one of ASICS' pinnacle running shoes.

ASICS Carbon Footprint

1. Materials

Processes to acquire finished materials include:

  • Raw material extraction
  • Yarn formation
  • Textile formation
  • Dyeing
  • Finishing

Materials-related carbon emissions for the GEL-KAYANO™ 32 shoe total 4.7 kg CO₂e/pair.

ASICS Carbon Footprint

2. Manufacturing

Processes for product manufacturing include:

  • Cutting
  • Sewing
  • Gluing
  • Embroidering
  • Assembling

Manufacturing-related carbon emissions for the GEL-KAYANO™ 32 shoe total 3.9 kg CO₂e/pair.

ASICS Carbon Footprint

3. Transportation

Processes for transporting materials during all stages of the product's life cycle include:

  • Acquiring materials from suppliers
  • Sending products from factories to retail shops
  • Returns
  • Transporting waste to disposal facilities

Transportation-related carbon emissions for the GEL-KAYANO™ 32 shoe total 0.4 kg CO₂e/pair.

ASICS Carbon Footprint

4. Use

Process-related carbon emissions for the GEL-KAYANO™ 32 shoe total 0.1 kg CO₂e/pair.

In partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), we’ve based our use emissions on the ASICS shoe care guidelines.

ASICS Carbon Footprint

5. End of Life

Processes for disposal include:

  • Disposal of used shoes
  • Recycling of shoe packaging materials
  • Disposal of materials used during manufacture

Disposal-related carbon emissions for the GEL-KAYANO™ 32 shoe total 1.1 kg CO₂e/pair*.

* Since ASICS’ products are sold globally, we use industrial or global representative scenarios to calculate disposal-related carbon emissions.

ASICS Carbon Footprint

Carbon footprint values for everyday items (non-ASICS products) are not verified by ASICS and based on publicly available third-party sources.
These values are illustrative of category averages and may vary depending on product type, manufacturing methods, and region.

ASICS Carbon Footprint

The GEL-KAYANO™ 32 shoe’s carbon footprint is approximately 29% lower than the industry average.*

*Lifecycle emissions for ASICS products are calculated using ASICS’ Carbon Footprint Methodology v1.1 and benchmarked against the most comprehensive
industry-average data available, conducted in partnership with MIT. Learn more about our methodology here.
